Roma defender Daniele Ghilardi has outlined the principles that shape his approach to football, placing discipline above talent and favouring quiet leadership over constant vocal presence. The comments came in a short interview with Ali-Lavoro, recorded while he was playing for the Italian national team.
Ghilardi said he performs best under pressure and set out his own priorities. "Do il meglio sotto pressione. Disciplina, personalità e talento, questo per me è l'ordine." In his view, discipline comes first, followed by personality, with talent third. He stresses the value of daily work and the importance of character in the squad.
On leadership, the Roma centre-back showed a clear preference for players who guide the group without always being in the spotlight. He said: "Meglio un leader silenzioso, che parla nel momento giusto e con i modi giusti." For Ghilardi, a good leader knows when to intervene rather than feeling the need to be heard all the time, a view that also reflects the value he places on concentration and responsibility within the group. He also put the team's needs ahead of personal ones.
Asked about managing fatigue during a match, Ghilardi explained when a player should stay on the pitch and when he should make way. He said: "Se sono esausto ma riesco a dare ancora qualcosa resto in campo, se ho i crampi è giusto far entrare altri." His answer highlights a refusal to give in to tiredness, while recognising the need to make room for a team-mate when physical condition no longer allows a player to contribute.
